Why combine Circus Maximus and Baths of Caracalla?

They're two complementary monuments. Circus Maximus was the venue for mass spectacle: 250,000 spectators crammed on the tiers for chariot races. The Baths of Caracalla were the space for daily regeneration: 1,600 people bathed together, exercised, read and socialised.

Seen together, they restore the everyday rhythms of imperial Rome better than any other itinerary. And practically speaking, they're so close that combining them makes sense.

Suggested itinerary (half day)

09:00 — Circus Maximus opens

Start at Circus Maximus (entrance at Piazza di Porta Capena, south curve side). The site opens at 09:30. Spend 45 minutes, including the Circo Maximo Experience multimedia route: AR tablets that reconstruct the original grandstands.

10:30 — Walk to the Baths

600 metres along Viale delle Terme di Caracalla. Eight calm minutes under century-old pines. Unforgettable photo opportunity: the view between the Palatine walls and the FAO building facade.

10:45 — Baths of Caracalla entrance

You have your digital ticket, skip the queue. Audio guide or guided tour. Complete visit of 90–120 minutes, with optional VR experience.

13:00 — Lunch in Testaccio

From Caracalla, 15 minutes west on foot. Testaccio market for Roman street food. Or slice pizza or classic trattoria.

14:30 — Free afternoon

Aventine (Orange Garden, keyhole view), or down to Trastevere, or back to the Colosseum.

Evening variation. From June to early August, swap the afternoon for a Summer Opera Season performance at the Baths: the complete experience of a day of imperial Roman luxury.

Circus Maximus: what to see

Circus Maximus was antiquity's largest entertainment structure: 621 metres long, 118 metres wide, capacity 250,000 spectators. For two thousand years, chariot races, two-horse races, naval displays and historical re-enactments took place here.

Today mostly the "void" remains: a perfect amphitheatre between the Palatine and Aventine. The actual archaeological site is at the south-east end (the curve), where you see the substructures of the tiers, the carceres (starting gates) and a section of original flooring.

Since 2017 the Circo Maximo Experience runs: a 40-minute augmented reality encounter. Wear a visor and "see" the circus rebuilt in 3D with races underway. Worth it: €12 per person, separate ticket from the Baths.

Baths of Caracalla: what to see

The complex preserves the central building (214 × 110 m) and some service structures. A standard visit touches:

Tickets: combined package vs. separate

Guided tour package from reseller

All-in-one: tickets, licensed guide, audio receiver, Circus Maximus VR experience. From €35. Duration 2.5–3 hours. Guarantees seeing both sites without complications.

Separate tickets and independent visit

Buy Circus Maximo Experience ticket (€12 online) and Baths of Caracalla ticket (€8 + €2) separately. Explore each at your own pace. Saving: €10–15 per person.

Roma Pass

Includes Caracalla as one of the free sites. Circus Maximo Experience isn't in the free category but offers 10% discount to pass holders.

My preference. First time in Rome, go for the guided tour: it saves nervous energy. If returning, independent visit with audio guide is more rewarding. Families with kids 7+ get the most from a guided tour: the guide knows how to engage them, and the Circus AR is a magnet for attention.

What to do nearby (after your visit)

Evening tours and special visits

Several resellers offer evening variations, especially in summer:

Baths of Caracalla illuminated at night
Evening visit: the light show restores the colours of the original marbles.
