Why combine Circus Maximus and Baths of Caracalla?
They're two complementary monuments. Circus Maximus was the venue for mass spectacle: 250,000 spectators crammed on the tiers for chariot races. The Baths of Caracalla were the space for daily regeneration: 1,600 people bathed together, exercised, read and socialised.
Seen together, they restore the everyday rhythms of imperial Rome better than any other itinerary. And practically speaking, they're so close that combining them makes sense.
Suggested itinerary (half day)
09:00 — Circus Maximus opens
Start at Circus Maximus (entrance at Piazza di Porta Capena, south curve side). The site opens at 09:30. Spend 45 minutes, including the Circo Maximo Experience multimedia route: AR tablets that reconstruct the original grandstands.
10:30 — Walk to the Baths
600 metres along Viale delle Terme di Caracalla. Eight calm minutes under century-old pines. Unforgettable photo opportunity: the view between the Palatine walls and the FAO building facade.
10:45 — Baths of Caracalla entrance
You have your digital ticket, skip the queue. Audio guide or guided tour. Complete visit of 90–120 minutes, with optional VR experience.
13:00 — Lunch in Testaccio
From Caracalla, 15 minutes west on foot. Testaccio market for Roman street food. Or slice pizza or classic trattoria.
14:30 — Free afternoon
Aventine (Orange Garden, keyhole view), or down to Trastevere, or back to the Colosseum.

Circus Maximus: what to see
Circus Maximus was antiquity's largest entertainment structure: 621 metres long, 118 metres wide, capacity 250,000 spectators. For two thousand years, chariot races, two-horse races, naval displays and historical re-enactments took place here.
Today mostly the "void" remains: a perfect amphitheatre between the Palatine and Aventine. The actual archaeological site is at the south-east end (the curve), where you see the substructures of the tiers, the carceres (starting gates) and a section of original flooring.
Since 2017 the Circo Maximo Experience runs: a 40-minute augmented reality encounter. Wear a visor and "see" the circus rebuilt in 3D with races underway. Worth it: €12 per person, separate ticket from the Baths.
Baths of Caracalla: what to see
The complex preserves the central building (214 × 110 m) and some service structures. A standard visit touches:
- Frigidarium (cold hall with basins): the largest covered interior of ancient Rome
- Tepidarium: warm transitional hall
- Caldarium: the heated rotunda, partially collapsed but still majestic
- Natatio: open-air swimming pool, colonnaded perimeter
- East and west gymnasiums, symmetrical
- Mosaics of the athletes: partly in-situ, partly in Vatican Museums
- Underground Mithraeum: Rome's largest, visitable by request
