The exact address and what to expect on arrival

The Baths of Caracalla are located in Rome at Viale delle Terme di Caracalla 52, in the San Saba neighbourhood (Municipality Rome I). The archaeological area occupies an entire urban block between Viale Aventino, Viale Guido Baccelli and Via Antoniana. The visitor entrance is clearly signposted with a large gate and covered ticket office.

The avenue bearing the monument's name runs just over 700 metres and connects Piazza di Porta Capena (near Circus Maximus) to Piazzale Numa Pompilio. Along the way you'll see centuries-old pines and sections of the Aurelian walls: don't confuse them with the baths, which lie behind a dedicated perimeter wall.

Local tip. If you ask a Roman for "Caracalla," they almost always mean the archaeological complex. If you're in a taxi, give the driver the civic address 52 Viale delle Terme di Caracalla to avoid being dropped at the corner with Viale Aventino.

How to get there by public transport

By metro

The key stop is Circus Maximus on Line B. From there it's 600 metres on foot (8–10 minutes), all level ground. Exit towards Viale Aventino, then follow Viale delle Terme di Caracalla south-east. You'll see the perimeter wall on the right, then the entrance.

From Termini Station the journey is straightforward: Line A to Termini, change to Line B direction Laurentina, get off at Circus Maximus. Total time 12–15 minutes, cost €1.50.

By bus

ATAC lines with stops directly outside the entrance or within 100 metres:

A single ticket (BIT) costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes on buses and metro.

By tram

No tram line runs directly past the Baths. The nearest stop is Tram 3 at Porta San Paolo/Piramide, from which it's a 15-minute walk. Useful if you're coming from Trastevere or Verano.

By train

Roma Ostiense Station is 1.3 km away (15 min on foot through the Testaccio neighbourhood). From Termini, metro B gets you there in 8 minutes.

How to get there on foot: recommended routes

From the Colosseum (1.1 km, 15 minutes)

Exit the Colosseum metro or the monument itself, take Via dei Fori Imperiali towards Piazza Venezia, but at the first roundabout turn left onto Via di San Gregorio. Skirt the side of the Palatine, pass Circus Maximus (on your right) and continue straight. The avenue changes name to Viale delle Terme di Caracalla — the entrance is 400 metres past the traffic light.

From Piazza Venezia (1.8 km, 25 minutes)

Via dei Cerchi runs the entire length of Circus Maximus. At the end, cross Piazza di Porta Capena: the Baths entrance is directly ahead, slightly to the right.

From the Aventine (Orange Garden, 1 km, 15 minutes)

Descend via di Santa Sabina, cross Viale Aventino and take Via Antoniana. You'll emerge right beside the Baths.

From Termini (2.8 km, 35 minutes)

Metro is preferable. On foot: Via Cavour, Via dei Fori Imperiali, Via di San Gregorio. An interesting route but long; in summer heat not recommended.

By taxi, car or scooter

Taxi

A standard ride from central Rome costs between €10 and €15. From Termini about €12, from the Vatican €18–22. Show the driver the address "Viale delle Terme di Caracalla 52" or the coordinates. Taxis can stop right outside the entrance, away from the pedestrian ZTL.

By private car

Not recommended. The entire city centre is a ZTL during peak hours. Public car parks with blue lines are scarce and usually full. The dedicated parking guide explains your limited options: Piramide car park 800 m away, Park Termini with metro access.

By scooter or motorbike

A convenient option. Motorcycle bays are plentiful around the ticket office. Note: helmets cannot be taken into the archaeological area — secure them well.

Bike sharing

Lime and Dott stations nearest are at Piazza di Porta Capena and on the Aventine. Minimal slope, ideal for pedalling.
