Opera and shows at the Baths of Caracalla

For decades the Baths have hosted the Rome Opera's summer season. With the Baths under restoration, the 2026 season was held at the Circus Maximus; the last one at the Baths was the Caracalla Festival 2025.

The summer season: where it is held now

The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma's summer programme ran from 29 June 2026 to 31 July 2026 at the Circus Maximus, because the Baths of Caracalla are undergoing restoration. The Circus Maximus seats about 6,000; tickets cost from €15 to €170.

As of 26 October 2026 the Opera had not yet announced where the next summer season will be held, and we found no official end date for the restoration of the Baths.

The Caracalla Festival

The last edition at the Baths was the Caracalla Festival 2025, titled “Tra sacro e umano”, from 29 June 2025 to 7 August 2025. Tickets were sold at the Teatro dell'Opera box office and on Ticketone.

In 2024 the festival used the 4,500-seat arena and the Teatro del Portico, in the area of the so-called temple of Jupiter. According to Wikipedia, the first stage was built in the caldarium in the late 1930s.

Tickets and box office

  • Show tickets are sold by the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, at its box office and through the channels it lists (for the festival at the Baths, also Ticketone).
  • On performance days a box office opens at the Baths of Caracalla, from an hour and a half before the start.
  • Show tickets and archaeological site tickets are separate: in 2024, sunset visits could only be bought together with that evening's show.

If it rains

The Teatro dell'Opera explains that in bad weather the show is never cancelled before its scheduled start time: so turn up anyway. Delays, interruptions and refunds follow the Opera's own terms.

Caracalla Danza

Besides opera, the Soprintendenza organises Caracalla Danza at the Baths with the Centro Coreografico Nazionale/Aterballetto: the second edition ran from 26 June 2026 to 5 July 2026.

Visiting the Baths by day

The archaeological site stays open to visitors at its usual hours: hours and tickets.
